As you may aware Voluntary Association for Peoples Service ( VAPS) have been working to increase the livelihoods opportunities of the farmers , women and youth in various districts of Tamilnadu and Pondicherry .Hailing from marginalised communities many women and youth underwent training on various skills. Many of them were able to earn their livelihood either by working in a micro enterprise concern or setting up a micro enterprise for themselves.
Majority of our trainee’s husbands are farmers and unorganised labourers. The Covid 19 Pandemic has curbed the daily wages of all the men and they are now at home. Our women beneficiaries who reside across various districts especially in villages are trapped in the COVID19 lockdown very seriously. They are not able to continue their regular work due to non availability of raw materials and lack of mobility. In Madurai women those who were involved with stitching jute /cloth bags and handicrafts are now left with no income.
Its a pressing fact that the Covid 19 crisis affect men and women differently. Both men and women have lost their livelihood but women under go a lot of mental stress as ensuring food consumption for entire family members every day has become the core issue. Hence women under go huge psyco social problems in the Covid 19 lock down period .Single women and destitute women are also under a daunting situation
We are continuously getting telephone calls from our women that the groceries and food supply is the essential need of the hour to combat the family crisis. At this stage , VAPS would like to systematically engage in the relief work for the families of the informal workers .We have identified 2000 women informal workers /daily wage workers families in Madurai district whose daily lives have been shaken to the core ever since the lockdown started in Madurai We expect your extreme cooperation in this regard. We would like to provide a Grocery pack worth Rs2000 that could help them to manage for at least a month.
